Hi folks,
Its been only 2 months and I am already seeing the so called AFTER-EFFECTS of "WORK" which my friends usually talk about when I was asked them about their work life. Well that's because I am working now and believe me whatever you friends tell you are true to everyone's belief.
Some whine about it, some hide facts, some just lie or even better they just never reveal about it.
Here I am in Bangalore... my first job.... and I am already seeing the CHANGES that my work is bringing me.
Listed below are some of my experiences and I guess they should go along with you too.
Its more of a BEFORE-AND-AFTER comparison for some of the aspects in our lives.
(1) THE COMPUTER
BEFORE: A computer was just an entertainment unit for you. You watched movies, listened to songs, played video-games and probably browsed the internet for fun.
AFTER: You have a cubicle, You "LOG IN" to your system, you check your office-mail, you open applications which you never have used or even heard about, you stare at the CLOCK in the taskbar most of the time (weird ain't it??), you check the calendar hoping to apply for a leave or calculate the days left for the weekend, probably the only time you wished your computer crashes for some reason :D
(2) DRESS-CODE
BEFORE: You always used to stick to one or two jeans all the time, you shave once a month, you would have never bothered to go for a hair-cut, you always wore that smelly socks or shoes no matter what!!, you might have skipped your bath just to catch up with your friends...
AFTER: You have only one option... FORMAL WEAR unless its a casuals day at office, you shave at least twice a week, you try to keep your hair short (well there are exceptions), you regularly wash your socks and polish your shoes, you tuck in your shirt,..... need I say more!!!!!!!!
(3) CODE OF CONDUCT
BEFORE: You at least called your professors or teachers "Sir" or "Ma(da)m", you laughed out loudly at your friend's jokes, you never bothered to submit your assignments or even take your examinations seriously, you never had to ask anyone for your breaks because you had the freedom. You add a lot of "Whatever","da/di", "machaan/maapla/maapi/maapu/dude/machi" etc (some words are only familiar to ones in south)
AFTER: You address a 40-year old with his/her name, you try to just smile or giggle at jokes, you strain your nerves to get your work done in time, you "REQUEST" your supervisor for breaks. You add a lot "Excuse me","Can I...","Pardon me",etc. Again there are some exceptions here which you only notice in your office.
(4) TRAVEL
BEFORE: You always started from home whenever you wanted to, you always had a friend who used to come to pick you up and would wait till you had your bath, had your food, etc etc, you always left to home whenever you wanted to...
AFTER: (only applicable if you are using company transport) you have to be ready 2 hours prior to your shift timings, you get calls from cab-drivers asking for directions, calls once he is near your landmark, calls you after reaching your destination, calls again if you haven't showed up, you get a call from the office to check if you boarded the cab, you sign on a trip sheet, its even worse if your first pickup and last drop (which I am :'( )
(5) FOOD
BEFORE: You ate whatever you wanted, how much ever you wanted, whenever you wanted.....
AFTER: You eat limited food, you can't ask for more, you have only 3o minutes before you get back to work (again differs in different work places)
(to be continued....)
This is just the first part of my 3 part blog... if you read it and liked it please comment :)
